Yes, Microsoft changed something in the latest update that is now preventing the old "Recycle Bin changed" detection logic/code from working properly.

I'll change the code to reflect this and will issue a new beta ASAP so you guys can test it. I'll let you know here once the new beta is out.

New Betas of v26.6 are out:

Winstep Xtreme beta:
https://www.winstep.net/xtreme-beta.zip

Nexus Ultimate beta:
https://www.winstep.net/ultimate-beta.zip

This is a beta and MUST be installed ON TOP of a full v26.4 OR LATER installation. Do NOT uninstall anything first, just exit all running Winstep applications and run the beta setup file.

There is no need to backup your settings first, but it does not hurt if you do either.

###

Let me know if this fixes the issue with the Recycle Bin on your systems or not. Things to look out for:

1. Does the image change when you add something to an empty recycle bin or empty the recycle bin (use the Windows recycle bin for this, NOT the Winstep recycle bin)?

2. Does the number of files listed by the Recycle Bin module match the actual number of files in the bin?

It seems to be working here, but this might not mean much since Microsoft has been making a lot of A/B testing lately, where not all features/changes are enabled for everyone despite all having the same Windows update installed.

If the Recycle Bin image does not change this might mean MS is no longer sending certain shell notifications for the bin, but I still have one more thing to try.

I have the same problem, even after installing the Beta version mentioned above.

The Winstep Recycle Bin module doesn't synchronize with Windows.

When I delete files, the Windows Recycle Bin (in the red square) fills up, but the Winstep Trash module remains at zero (0). I have to quit and restart Winstep for the module to update and display the number of deleted files.

However, when I empty the Recycle Bin from the Winstep module, both empty correctly.

When I empty the Windows Recycle Bin, the Winstep Trash module doesn't empty and remains full, even though the Windows Recycle Bin has emptied.

Similarly, I have to quit and restart Winstep for the module to show zero (0).

I should mention that I have all the latest Windows 11 updates and that I'd already noticed this problem occasionally, even under Windows 10, but I didn't pay much attention to it—perhaps wrongly, I realize now that several people are raising the issue.

I couldn't say whether this minor problem originates from Windows or WinStep; I have no idea, but it seems more likely to be Windows with its frequent changes and updates.

Can you please confirm you are running version 26.06.1688 (WorkShelf Preferences -> About tab -> click version number at the top right corner)?

Also, what about the number of files in the bin?

Wait a little bit after starting WorkShelf/Xtreme, then check how many files the Winstep recycle bin says are in the trash (balloon tooltip). Now delete a file you do not need. Check the number in the module again. Now open the bin and restore the file. Check the number in the module again.

Windows. Code had been working just fine for decades.

I installed the new beta on Windows 10. The first time the recycle bin icon changed immediately when files were added to it, and it also changed immediately when I emptied it. After the first time the icon did not change when files were added to it. If I restored one of the files in the recycle bin, the icon changed immediately. If I then emptied the recycle bin, the icon also changed immediately.

The number of items in the recycle bin did not update as more items were added to it, whether the icon showed full or empty. Deleting one item of several from the recycle bin, even though the icon showed empty, caused the icon to change to full.

:? I think I got that correct.

Testing on Windows 11 produced the same results as Windows 10.

I did reboot after installing the update, and before testing, on both systems.

Same as NEZBIT, latest installed beta version No. 26.06.1888 and not 26.06.1688.
The Windows Recycle Bin icon is full, containing 115 items, but the Winstep Recycle Bin module remains empty (0), even the balloon tooltip.

I restored an item from the Windows Recycle Bin, so there were 114 items remaining. Immediately, the WinStep Recycle Bin module displayed 115 items instead of 114, along with the balloon tooltip. I quit and restarted WinStep, and the Recycle Bin module then displayed 114 items, as did the balloon tooltip.

However, when I empty the Recycle Bin from the module, both the module and the Windows 11 icon empty. But when I empty the Recycle Bin from the Windows icon on the desktop, it changes to empty, but the WinStep module and the balloon tooltip remain at 114 items. I have to quit and restart WinStep for the module to reset to 0.

So, basically it works sometimes but not all of the time?!

Need you guys to check one more thing:

Getting the number of items in the Windows recycle bin and their total size is accomplished by calling SHQueryRecycleBin. However, because this triggers actual file system enumeration, it is a very expensive operation and can take a relatively long time if the Recycle Bin has thousands of files.

This is why SHQueryRecycleBin is only called when absolutely necessary. Also, this call "blocks", that is, it does NOT return until the operation completes, and until then the calling application is "frozen", does not react to mouse clicks, etc...

Because of this, the SHQueryRecycleBin call is actually performed by winstep.exe. When the main applications detects recycle bin activity via a Windows notification (and apparently what MS did was change something related to these notifications) instead of calling SHQueryRecycleBin itself it calls winstep.exe with a special argument. Winstep.exe then does the actual enumeration and once it gets the result it sends a message to the main application with the number of files in the bin and their size.

Now, when deleting or restoring multiple files Windows might/will send multiple notifications. Because of this there is a mechanism that prevents winstep.exe from being called multiple times while it is still busy getting the results of SHQueryRecycleBin.

However, if this protection mechanism malfunctions for whatever reason or winstep.exe gets "stuck", the main application does not invoke winstep.exe and therefore does not receive further notifications.

So, I need you guys to do a couple more tests please: open the Windows Task Manager in the Details tab. Sort by name and scroll to the bottom. When you manipulate the recycle bin, does winstep.exe briefly appear? Also, does it go away immediately after or does it "get stuck" running?

In the mean time I'll get a new beta ready with a couple more changes....

I opened the Windows Task Manager, Details tab, and Winstep.exe appears and disappears immediately when I start Winstep. After that, WorkShelf.exe and WsxService.exe remain permanently. I've tried accessing the Recycle Bin using both the Winstep module and the Windows Recycle Bin icon, but the two aforementioned files remain unchanged, and Winstep.exe never appears.

Ah, something else that might be important: wait *at least* 30 seconds after deleting or restoring an item to check the number of files in the bin reported by the module or checking the icon... this is because, for the reasons already explained above, all these actions are delayed as much as possible to avoid the application being flooded with recycle bin requests.

I'm seeing pretty much the same thing as Picco14. I tested it about a dozen times and I did notice WsMMPlay.exe opened for a few seconds and then closed during one of the tests. I'm not sure why that happened, I wasn't playing any media files.

I did come across this article today.

This month's Windows 11 update broke the Recycle Bin, OneDrive, and possibly your PC's stability.

Microsoft says a workaround is available for affected devices, but only commercial users can deploy it for now. To obtain additional details on how to mitigate the issue, system administrators must contact Microsoft Support for Business. Everyone else will have to wait for a permanent fix, which Microsoft says will be delivered in a future Windows update.

It's already done, even 10, 15, 20 minutes later...
The problem persists as explained above, no synchronization.

Sorry to hear that, it's a real puzzle that will surely drive you crazy.

This minor issue doesn't stop me from appreciating Winstep and all your work.

Picco14,

I just want to say that I think you did a great job with your conversion of "Parisienne" to Winstep. I'll definitely be using the two themes together at some time in the near future.

I also like your "Hinged"/"Lapidi" conversion. I've used the two themes together myself, but you have blended them perfectly.

I was also sorry to hear about your loss. Please accept my condolences.
